Title 19 – The Nursing Home Scare

June 04, 2018 by Moertl, Wilkins & Campbell, S.C.

In 1960 a woman living in the United States had a life expectancy of 73 years.  In 2017, that life expectancy was 81 years.  However, we all know many individuals who are living well into their 90s.

It is not uncommon for a monthly nursing home bill to range between $10,000 and $13,000.  These costs can devastate the finances of the average family.  A good plan will provide options to preserve and protect assets.  A few key elements of any plan include the following:

  1. A good, thorough financial durable power of attorney prepared by an experienced elder law attorney.
  2. A review of long-term care insurance options.
  3. A review of income and assets with an experienced elder law attorney to put a concrete plan in place to prepare for the potential costs of long-term care.
